Massachusetts car insurance for teen drivers.jpg

There are a number of extra restrictions placed on teen drivers in Massachusetts, and as much as teens might argue the point, it’s for their own benefit. Teenage driving is an inherently risky practice, and the government has recognized this. Certainly Massachusetts car insurance companies have recognized this, which is why it’s more expensive to insure a teen, but significant discounts can be offered if teens take voluntary driving courses.\

Something called the Junior Operating Restriction is enforced in Massachusetts. For the first six months after teens get their license, they cannot have an under 18 passenger unless there is also a passenger who is at least 21, has a year of driving experience and sits in the front passenger seat. Siblings are exempt from this restriction.

This rule was put in place was to avoid the distractions of friends while teens gain experience on the road first. When teens improve their driving ability (which can only be done by more driving) they will be better equipped to deal with rowdy passengers.

Any driver under 18 is also prohibited from using their cell phone in any way while driving, unless it’s for an emergency. Teens take note - running late for a party is not an emergency!

There are also driver preparation courses in Massachusetts which can help new motorists have a better understanding of the road rules, and gain more confidence driving and defensive driving courses. These courses may also help reduce Massachusetts car insurance premiums.
